A Shot of Sunshine

One of the most critical nutrients everyone needs is Vitamin D, and one of the best ways to ensure adequate levels of it is with the Sunshine Shot, offered at all Pro Health locations. This super vitamin plays an important role in maintaining a strong immune system, a healthy weight and strong bones, among other benefits.

Unfortunately, too many people don’t get enough. Nearly 42% of American adults are considered Vitamin D deficient. In some populations, it’s even higher – including nearly 63% of Hispanic and nearly 82% of Black adults!

What does Vitamin D do?

This essential vitamin is primarily responsible for helping your body absorb calcium – which keeps your bones strong. But it plays other important roles, such as:

  • improving immune function
  • reducing inflammation
  • supporting your metabolism

Those who don’t get enough Vitamin D are at risk for a variety of complications, from weight gain to being sick more often to serious conditions like osteoporosis.

Who is at risk of Vitamin D deficiency?

Although your body makes its own Vitamin D when your bare skin is exposed to the sun, maintaining healthy levels can be difficult for some. You may be at risk of deficiency if:

  • you have darker skin. The darker your skin, the less Vitamin D your body naturally makes from sun exposure.
  • your sun exposure is limited. If you work inside, you may not get enough. Even wearing sunscreen can limit your ability to get adequate Vitamin D. While sunscreen is important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, it’s important to manage these potential side effects.
  • you’re older than 70. As we age, our skin’s ability to make its own Vitamin D with sunlight exposure declines.
  • you have a condition that limits fat absorption. Conditions like Crohn’s Disease, celiac disease or ulcerative colitis can negatively impact your levels because Vitamin D is absorbed with fat in your digestive system.
  • you have had gastric bypass surgery or suffer from obesity.

What are the symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency?

Signs of Vitamin D deficiency may include fatigue, muscle weakness or cramps, bone pain, mood changes, hair loss or frequent illness, among others. If you suspect you’re Vitamin D deficient, discuss your concerns with a Pro Health provider who can check your levels and recommend a course of action if necessary.
