What is testosterone?
Testosterone is a hormone that plays a big role in the development and maintenance of male characteristics. It is primarily produced in the testicles and is responsible for regulating libido, bone density, fat distribution, red blood cell production, muscle mass and sperm production. With age, it is normal for testosterone levels to naturally decline. This typically begins to occur around the age of 30.
Do I have low testosterone?
Low testosterone levels can lead to a variety of symptoms, including decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, trouble sleeping, mood changes, decreased bone density and muscle mass, along with increased body fat. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be a good time to stop by and consult with our team to determine the underlying cause – TRT may be extremely beneficial to you.
Testosterone replacement therapy – the process
To start, TRT involves the administration of exogenous testosterone to supplement the body’s natural levels. This can be done through a few different methods including, injections, gels, patches and implants. The goal of this therapy is to restore testosterone levels to a normal range and alleviate symptoms associated with low testosterone.
Like we mentioned, before starting therapy, it is important to undergo an evaluation by a healthcare provider, like our Nurse Practitioners, including a physical exam, blood tests and other diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause of low testosterone. It is absolutely critical to rule out any underlying medical conditions that may be contributing to low levels, such as diabetes, obesity or thyroid disorders. Once all of the initial tests and conversations are held, we can then begin!
A quick note before starting with TRT
While testosterone therapy can have positive benefits in treating symptoms of low t, there are a few risks to keep in mind. Common side effects of this treatment may include acne, fluid retention, breast enlargement, and an increase in red blood cell count. Additionally, testosterone therapy may not be for everyone. It is generally not recommended for men with medical conditions such as prostate cancer, urinary symptoms or uncontrolled heart failure. Once again, this is why we can’t stress enough the importance of discussing your medical history with our team prior to getting started.
