How’s your energy level and appetite? If you’re feeling extra tired, forgetting more things or are a little more irritable than usual…you might just have a stressful job or be a parent to young children. But you may also need additional Vitamin B12!
What is Vitamin B12?
This essential vitamin plays many roles in your overall health. Vitamin B12:
- helps your body make red blood cells.
- assists in the development and function of the central nervous system.
- contributes to the creation of DNA.
- supports converting food into energy.
Although it’s critical for life, your body can’t make Vitamin B12 by itself. Normally, humans get this nutrient from food. It’s found naturally in animal products, including meat and dairy foods, although it is sometimes added to other (fortified) foods, including certain cereals or dairy alternatives.
What are the symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency?
When the body does not get enough Vitamin B12, it may experience a number of physical, neurological or psychological symptoms. These may include, among others:
- Exhaustion
- Loss of appetite and/or weight loss
- Numbness or tingling in the hands and/or feet
- Vision problems
- Forgetfulness or confusion
- Depression
- Irritability
- General mood changes
Because the symptoms are so general and may fit a variety of diagnoses, B12 deficiency can be difficult to identify. If you suspect a B12 deficiency, the providers at Pro Health may recommend a complete blood count (CBC) to verify your levels.
Who needs Vitamin B12?
Everyone needs Vitamin B12! But some people are at an increased risk of deficiency or may otherwise benefit from supplementation. You may consider Vitamin B12 injections if you:
- follow a vegan or vegetarian diet
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
- are older than 60
- have a digestive disorder, such as celiac or Crohn’s Disease
- take certain medications, including common prescriptions like hormonal birth control or metformin, among others
- drink a significant amount of alcohol
How can Vitamin B12 supplementation help me?
In addition to treating deficiency, if it’s present, Vitamin B12 injections can have a variety of health benefits, including:
- raising energy levels.
- improving cognitive function.
- promoting healthy metabolism.
- boosting the immune system.
- …and more!
